  This umbrella features golden elephants, hand-painted with on a pink and violet batik-like saa paper background. The tradition of saa paper dates back two hundred years ago. Apparently, Burmese hill tribe villagers were the first to notice that the bark of the mulberry tree peels away naturally. They found that they could take this bark and create a pulp with it that could then be dried over wooden frames to create a beautiful paper - all without destroying the tree. This process is still carried out by hand in northern Thailand and various techniques have been developed to create different textures and patterns. The umbrellas created by Wicharn Wongkham make use of locally available saa paper and are further embellished with bamboo spines and hand-painted with intricate designs. This parasol features designs rooted in the elegance of Thai architecture. Hang it from the ceiling to add a touch of Thailand to any d�cor, or use it to accessorize cheerful afternoon attire and block the heat of the sun, as in its traditional use. Exposure to wetness or extreme dampness is not advised.
